The pros give their verdict on the voluminous, backcombed chignon
A voluminous chignon…the perfect hairstyle. Although this look may look simple to create, you’ll need concentration and patience to get through each step. As long as you have this, your style will be perfect. The pros reveal their secrets on creating the voluminous, backcombed chignon.
To create beautiful, backcombed hair, you will need to work and prepare the hair well to ensure it stays in place and holds its structure. ‘For this look, the idea is for stands of your hair to appear naturally messy and undone, whereas in reality, you will need to work with each and every strand to create the right effect. To do this, the hair needs to be put into velcro rollers or curled using curling tongs, then smoothed backwards into a chignon. Of course, don’t forget to apply mousse to the hair to give it the texture and volume necessary. Once your hair is dry, gently tease the crown area and lengths with a comb to loosen the curls and you can then start to backcomb’
Backcombing gives hair a messy, but styled, effect and adds texture as well as hold. ‘The edges of the style are not, however, backcombed at all. In fact, they are fairly smooth and straight. For the backcombed chignon, you will need to backcomb your hair on the underside and then brush lightly over the top to position your hair how you want it to lie.’
The backcombed hair on the Tom Ford runway can be recreated on short and long hair. ‘Backcombing will add some volume to the roots of your ponytail or chignon, with a neo-grunge vibe. The rock-chic trend is definitely creeping into this season’s hairstyles’.
Our tip: When backcombing, only backcomb as much hair as you will need to create the look you are after. Make light work of the job by using a soft bristle comb, for best results.
