The dishevelled 80s chignon
Back in the 80s, haircuts were unstructured, dishevelled and full of volume – liberated and whacky! Hints of this theme can be seen at Vivienne Westwood Red this autumn-winter.
80s hairstyles. Platinum blonde, the mullet and the body-boosted blow-dry were key 80s trends. Though no one really wears these styles any more (other than at fancy dress parties), the dishevelled, neo-grunge vibe that started it all off and really took off in the 90s, has survived. We love the flyaway side to Vivienne Westwood Red’s very 80s hairstyle as well as the peroxide blonde colour, hugely emblematic of the decade.
Preparing your hair. The trick with this style is mastering backcombing. This is what gives it volume and its (deliberately) windswept look. Start by carefully backcombing your mid-lengths and ends. To do this, take a comb and work section by section. Hold your hair up then use your comb to brush your hair back towards the roots. Do this throughout your hair then move on to creating your chignon.
How to create the dishevelled chignon. After backcombing your hair, pull it back into a fairly high ponytail, without smoothing down the sides. Next, work your hair into a chignon by fixing your mid-lengths and ends at the top of your head. The idea is to let your hair run free whilst at the same time managing to tame it. To hide your hair bands, use bobby pins or hair grips the same colour as your hair.
