The neat braid VS the hippy-chic plait

The plait isn’t exactly a style game changer…the spring/summer catwalks have been awash with braids and plaits. Whether you have long, short, curly or straight hair, the plait looks great on all different hair types, especially for summer. So, which plait do your prefer? The messy or neat version?

The neat braid. As well as being super on-trend, this style is also very practical for day-to-day wear. This is one of the only hairstyles that ensure your hair is never on your face. One gust of wind or a sudden movement won’t budge your solid plait that will stay fixed to your head neatly all day long. This look is timeless and so classic, however if you want to give your neat plait a modern twist, try using different hair ties to mix things up. A ribbon or even a bow-tie elastic can work wonders for your style. Here, the neat plait starts at the top of the head and finishes right at the ends of the hair.

The hippy-chic plait. If you haven’t got as much time on your hands, the messy plait looks just as elegant as the neat version but with a bohemian vibe. This style looks great paired with long hair, and is a lifesaver if you’re at the point where your bob is growing out. The hippy-chic touch is added by loose strands of hair that fly away from the plait in a haphazard manner. The best way to create this effect is to create a neat plait first, then tease out sections to add to the dishevelled look. Try adding some volume to your hair near the roots to give a bed-head vibe to your hairstyle. This style doesn’t need any extras added, so stay away from accessories. A simple hair tie will do just fine.

Our verdict. There’s no competing with the hippy-chic plait! The loose version of the plait is perfect for any occasion and brings an original touch to your overall look whilst remaining chic and elegant. The neat plait tends to look too plain and traditional. Try out the more daring of these two trends in 2014.
