The 1920s: haircuts and hairstyles that left their mark on the decade

Share

Besides the emancipation of women, the 20's also marked a hair milestone for ladies who traded in their locks for short androgynous haircuts and dared to try out wild hairstyles. We take a closer look at 3 major hairstyles from the decade.

The bob: the cult cut

To adapt to their new active lifestyles, women went for a radical change with the bob. It was often a blunt short ear-length bob with layers at the nape. The clear-cut lines of this bob haircut gave it a graphic style, often reinforced by a blunt fringe which added structure. A perfect masculine-feminine look to affirm that women were equal to men, worn either straight or in waves.

The Charleston chignon: a flagship hairstyle

To attend the wild parties in the roaring twenties, women showcased their short locks in messy chignons worn to one side. They marked out beautiful and glamorous finger waves in their locks before effortlessly wrapping them up to form a chignon fixed using hairpins. A messy yet elegant hairstyle for a romantic chignon, whose charm enhanced their features right until the end of the night.

The headband: an extravant, festive accessory

To enhance these hairstyles you cannot beat a stylish accessory. The must-have accessory of the decade was the headband, which, after being neglected for many years, made a huge comeback during the roaring twenties. It was adorned with rhinestones, pearls or feathers and was placed horizontally across the forehead to be shown off like a real piece of hair jewellery !
