How to keep backcombed hair voluminous

Luckily, we discovered the backcombing technique years ago. In fact, it’s often a saviour for women with fine, limp hair. By backcombing, you are pushing back your hair towards the root, giving it a voluminous ‘mane’ effect. Do you struggle to keep this backcombed style full of volume all day? Here are our tips to make backcombing last.

Backcombing allows fine hair types to become full of texture and have more body. ‘Whatever your hair type, you can use backcombing to add extra oomph to your hairstyle. To get the most out of this volume-boosting technique, try backcombing on hair that isn’t squeaky clean or uber straight, as it won’t last very long due to the hair being too slippery’.

Before starting to backcomb, first make sure you have the correct tools. ‘To make backcombing easier and improve the effect, use a comb with thinly spaced teeth. Have a can of hairspray ready too, to hold the style in place.’

When backcombing your hair, you really need to be a perfectionist and make sure that each section is backcombed well, to ensure your style doesn’t simply flop within a couple of hours. ‘There are certain techniques which will help your style last longer. Firstly, make sure the sections are small, and apply hairspray before backcombing the section, which will give it extra staying-power. By doing this, the hair pushed back towards the root will stay there much longer, and will be easier to style.

Our tip: Backcombing will not damage your hair, so don’t be scared of this when backcombing your hair for the first time! It’s up to you whether you rock a backcombed style worthy of Diana Ross, or a backcombed rockabilly quiff!
