Choosing the right comb

Having the right shampoo and hair treatments is all well and good, but you also need to equip yourself with the right accessories and tools. The comb is one of these essential items. From the type of teeth to the material it’s made from… Find out which one’s best for you!

Combs can be made out of many different materials, but there are two in particular; let’s be honest, you’re highly unlikely to pull a comb made out of tortoise skin or ivory from your make-up bag! “Most combs tend to be made from wood or Bakelite, a plastic by-product. This material offers you the choice of flexible or more rigid combs.”

Combs are mainly used for removing knots from hair after washing. Conditioning your hair after shampooing will make this process a lot easier! But that’s not all combs can be used for. “Combs can also be used for styling, especially if you have curly, frizzy or thick hair. Use a wide-tooth comb to remove knots and an even wider-tooth comb for styling.”

Tail combs are useful for carefully selecting sections of hair when inserting curlers. They are also useful for separating sections during colouring, as well as for creating certain hairstyles. “The tail comb is also great for creating partings. Side-partings, zigzag-partings, centre-partings… Your parting is ready in just a few seconds.”

To help you when styling, try spraying hairspray onto your comb first. “The comb is really handy for untangling and for working on specific sections of the hair. To get your whole hair nice and smooth, use a brush instead.”

Our tip: If you tend to get static hair, avoid using a comb made from synthetic materials. This will only make it worse. Instead, go for wooden combs.
