Side parted grunge hair seen on the catwalk

You’ve seen chic, side-swept party hair and even side-swept styles for short locks. What you haven’t seen, is the grunge version of this trend which is, essentially, crimped hair with an extra voluminous side. This is the look that was seen on the Hakaan catwalk.

On the runway, hair was sculpted into a very low-line parting. The hair below the parting was smoothed to the side of the head using a strong-hold gel, whereas the hair on the top half of the parting was backcombed to create extra volume, which covered an eye on the models. Realistically, if you want to try this hairstyle, you should make it more wearable for day-to-day looks, to avoid looking like you’re dressing for Halloween.

Side parted grungy hair is actually quite easy to re-create at home. However, you will need to set aside some time to backcomb your hair. To ensure that your style isn’t too straight and difficult to work with, this look works best with hair that isn’t squeaky clean, for example 2 days after washing your hair. Start by drawing a low-line parting on either side of your head, then tie the hair below the parting line to keep it separate from the top. Next, is the upper part of your parting. Backcomb this section using a comb and lots of hairspray. Don’t be scared to really play up the volume on this side of your parting, as the contrast between volume and the slick gelled section is key to the look. Once you have backcombed the top section, go back to the lower section you tied at the beginning. Slick back your hair using a high-shine strong-hold gel. Your hair now has two different textures, and two different extremes of volume.
