How to create a side-swept retro look

Immortalised by Lauren Bacall and revisited by Madonna and Marion Cotillard, the styled side-swept look is the height of fashion for 2017. To successfully and quickly create this look with your comb, follow our advice.

This pretty side-swept look has the advantage of suiting all hair types: short, mid-length and long. However, it may prove difficult to get the curl to hold in long hair. The only condition is that you must have naturally straight hair or properly straightened hair before you begin. To ease styling get your hands on:

– A comb
– A brush
– Water mist spray (optional)
– Fixing gel
– A flat hairpin

Beforehand

After having washed and dried your hair, put in a side parting and start by curling your locks to accentuate the retro element of this hairstyle. Perfectionists will use rollers to get the desired volume and those in a rush will opt for curling tongs or straighteners. Once your hair is dry, brush it with your head down to gain volume without flattening the curls. If your hair has got too big and frizzy, reshape the waves using a fine comb and styling spray.

Wet the front section

Now it’s time to focus on the front side-swept section. Separate out a section of hair at the front of the head and wet it. To be able to work with this section of hair, it must be wet but properly wrung out. The best way to do this is to spray it with mist spray, then to dry it quickly with a towel.

Work on movement

Gather the section together on one side of your face and separate it into several strands. This will designate how many waves you want to create (normally two to three is enough). On the first strand which is still damp, apply liquid gel which is easier to spread out and has a strong hold . Then shape the wave using a comb. If you wish the result to look highly sophisticated, hold the point where the wave stops between two fingers and fix it flat to your head with a flat hairpin. For a softer effect, skip this step. Repeat this process with all of the strands in the front section.

Fix the front section

Ideally leave the front section to dry naturally and avoid using your hairdryer. However, if you must use it, put it on the lowest power setting possible.

Apply hairspray and you’re ready to steal the limelight wherever you go!
