6 mistakes to avoid when you have dandruff

Trying to get rid of dandruff at all costs often ends up exacerbating the problem, so we have taken a closer look at the mistakes you should avoid to get your hair back in tip-top condition.

1. Washing your hair too often

When dandruff is visible at the roots, generally your first reaction is to wash your hair every day to get rid of these unsightly flakes. However, this is a serious error: it overly stimulates the scalp and thus makes dandruff worse. Instead, leave longer intervals between hairwashes!

2. Using any anti-dandruff shampoo at random

Not all dandruff is the same and therefore it should be treated differently depending on its nature. The most common type is “dry” dandruff which consists of white flakes which shed and drop down onto your shoulders. It can be cleared with treatments rich in zinc or juniper essential oil. However, these active ingredients are ineffective on greasy dandruff, which stays stuck to your scalp in yellow patches. You will need a shampoo containing salicylic acid to clear it up. It is essential to identify the type of dandruff you have beforehand so that you can treat it effectively.

3. Not adhering to the application time of your shampoo

Using a suitable shampoo is all well and good, but leaving it on your hair for the correct amount of time so it can work on your scalp is even better! So don’t rinse the shampoo off immediately – allow it time to soothe your scalp and effectively get rid of dandruff .

4. Rubbing your scalp when washing

To unstick greasy dandruff or to make sure that you get rid of flakes, do you rub your scalp when washing your hair? These strips your already fragile skin and will make the problem worse. Instead, gently massage your scalp more gently with your fingertips.

5. Using too many styling products

Say goodbye to excess hairspray, gel, wax, anti-hair loss lotions, etc…Their formulations, which have a high alcohol content, irritate the scalp and dry it out, causing even more flakes to form.

6. Hiding dandruff under accessories

Are you ashamed of your dandruff and do you try and hide it under headbands, summer hats or beanies in winter? Bad news: you are actually suffocating your scalp and promoting the proliferation of dandruff by creating an imbalance. It is better to let your scalp breathe instead!
