Co-washing, the solution for dry hair?

No, co-washing is not just another way of saying “2 in 1”, or a method of applying shampoo and conditioner at the same time. In fact, this term doesn’t mean at all what you think it might mean. Let us explain…

Co-washing cleared up. The term co-washing is a shortened version of “conditioner washing”, conditioner being the key element of this new method. Co-washing is based on the fact that shampoo often contains detergents that can aggravate and dry out your hair. Even though conditioner also contains washing agents, they are less aggressive! So, to make things clear for you, co-washing is washing your hair with conditioner to get both clean and hydrated hair.

Is co-washing a good idea? Today there are many gentle, pH-balanced shampoos on the market. This means that you can wash your hair with shampoo and follow with a conditioner without damaging your hair. Therefore, only washing your hair with conditioner may not make a huge difference. However, there are a few exceptions to the rule when it comes to certain hair types…

Advice from the pro. Washing your hair only with conditioner can be good for your hair, as long as you don’t do it every day. This is true for very thick, very dry or curly hair. Alternate the co-washing method with your usual shampoo routine. Washing your hair with conditioner will leave your hair looking gorgeous and glossy. Co-washing is also great if you have very fine and very dry hair. This method helps to hydrate it. But remember to always alternate with your normal shampoo routine.
