We’ve not seen the last of retro hairstyles. Still at the forefront of many trends, retro hairstyles are real sources of inspiration for designers and hair stylists. Autumn-winter 2012 is set to see a return of 60s styles and BIG volume.

Sixties volume. The 60s saw a new wave of freedom sweep across the world of fashion and beauty. These women became more and more active and wanted to find a place for themselves in society. Having shown their rebellious sides through short boy-cuts, some of them decided to go back to basics with long hair, although looser and less strict than before. The trend is backcombed for extreme, weightless volume. Think Brigitte Bardot or The Ronettes.

The oversized backcomb! There is only one way to create volume and add body to your hair: backcombing. Simply backcombing a few select sections will give your hair shape and movement. But to get an oversized blow-dry look, you need to backcomb all of your hair. To do this, all you need is a comb and a little patience! Work section by section. Hold each piece of hair in the air, slide your comb into your hair and push it towards the roots. Repeat this across your whole head.

How to pull off big hair. For a glamorous result, the cut needs to be slightly layered. Hair is backcombed at the top and hairspray is sprayed to make sure the effect lasts. Straight ends are a no-go with this style. Go for rounded ends using a round brush for a retro chic effect.
