Understanding labels on hair colouring products

When you go to the supermarket to buy a colouring product you are soon overwhelmed by the amount of choice on the shelves. Brands, types of colouring, colours… It’s not always easy to know which one to go for! To avoid any nasty surprises, follow our advice from the pros.

Your first instinct is to choose your colour by looking at the girl on the front of the box. Remember that the “before” and “after” shown on the box aren’t always true! “It’s unlikely you’ll end up with exactly the same colour. It all depends on where you’re starting from, your hair’s basic features. If your hair is already coloured and you ignore the colour base that the product is designed for, there’s a strong chance you won’t end up looking like the girl in the picture!” However, if your hair is natural and you follow the “before” and “after” instructions, you might just get the result it promises.

Buying hair dyes at your supermarket is a good option if you’re not going for a big change. “But for blondes who want to go brown or vice versa, the hair needs to undergo a pre-colour treatment, which these products don’t do. You could end up with the wrong colour, which can often be difficult to rectify. So for this type of change, it’s best to visit your hairdresser, who will know exactly what to do! So our word of advice is to choose products that are close to your natural colour in order to avoid any nasty surprises.

As for formulas, they tend to be the same from brand to brand. “They are often full of pigments so there is not much to tell you there.” But this shouldn’t stop you from testing the product before applying it all over your hair. “To do this, place a small amount of the product on your arm to see whether or not your skin has an allergic reaction.” Do this again if you change products.

Our tip: If you follow this advice you’ll be pleased with the result, as long you know how to apply the product and leave it on for the time specified! So make sure you read the instructions and, if you like, ask a friend to help you for an even result.
