The twist

Think braids are the only way to go this season? You’re wrong! While the braid has so far been queen of the catwalk and first choice for fashionistas, there is an alternative: the twist. Though quicker and easier to do, it is by no means less chic or less bohemian. Here’s how…

The principle. Just for a moment, forget about the simple three-strand braid and its variations which require a great deal of skill. To mix it up this summer, take some inspiration from the S/S 2012 collections at Antonio Marras, Philip Lim, Gucci and Adam. All of these labels have been working the twist to create sophisticated, on-trend styles. To do it yourself, simply take a section of hair and twist the whole length. Then it’s up to you to play around with it!

Who for? The twist works on all hair types, whether straight, curly or frizzy, but you will need a bit of length to start with to have something to twist! Perfect for mid-length, long and even short bob cuts.

Styling ideas. The simplest style is the twisted half-ponytail. Create a centre parting, take two pieces of hair from each side, twist them and then secure them at the back of your head. You could also try twisting your ponytail. Create a high ponytail then then twist the rest of your hair to the ends and secure with a hairband. Another idea is the crown twist. This will make things a lot easier than the crown braid! Take a fairly thick piece of hair from one side of the front of your head, twist it, then wrap it around your head like a crown, securing at the other side of your head.
