Fine hair: which colours can make it look thicker?

To make fine hair look thicker, you do not necessarily need to cut it. Besides texturising powder, there is another solution for making your locks look thicker: hair colouring. Here’s how.

How does it work?

A colour made up of different shades, created by the tie-dye technique or highlights, makes the hair look thicker. More precisely, it is the contrast between light and dark colours which gives the illusion of thicker hair . To achieve this optical illusion effect, your hairdresser will colour your base a tone darker than your natural hair colour and they will lighten a few strands on the surface. This effect can be horizontal (darker roots) or vertical with highlights . On the other hand, say goodbye to block colours which are too extreme, such as platinum blond or ebony black, as they give no illusion of depth. As for application, it is best to call on a specialist. Your hairdresser will find the shade suited to the look you wish to create, whilst taking into account other factors such as your complexion, your haircut and your hair’s condition.

Possible solutions

If you do not wish to go for a radical change

Opt for standard highlights. You just need to lighten a few strands to give movement to a haircut.

The on-trend option

The most daring amongst us can opt for “ombré hair”, which consists of lightening the tips for a sun-kissed effect. A technique which differs from the tie-dye or dip dye technique as the demarcations between blond and brown are much less radical. This technique gives your hair an ethereal shiny effect.

The natural version

You could also opt for a combination of brown and blond strands which when mixed, give the impression of light brown when in the shade and dark blond in the sun. The vast palette of colours used gives the illusion of depth. The result is natural and subtle due to the combination of two highlighting techniques, vertical and horizontal. Gisele Bündchen has gone for a gold-hued version of this technique to perfect her surfer look.
