The statement chignon: sophisticated and original
This timeless classic has been re-styled and re-imagined hundreds of times. Worn in the traditional sense or with a much more bohemian feel, the chignon has now had an XXL overhaul. This look is ideal for creating an elegant and original hairstyle which won’t be spotted on anyone else.
The trend. Va-va voom volume! The Vivienne Westwood chignons were all about body and size. Even the topknot pictured seems to hang lower than we’d expect. For an on-trend chignon this season, you should be aiming for a bird’s nest effect.
Who can wear the statement chignon? Women with hair past their shoulders. With this style, short locks will struggle to create the desired shape and volume as lots of backcombing action is needed. If your lengths are voluminous already, that’s half the battle won! Ask your friend for a helping hand and cut down on styling time. 2 hands simply isn’t enough!
Get the runway look. Start by brushing your hair backwards and gather hair at the rear of your head. You now need to get backcombing! To do this, take a comb and some strong-hold hairspray. You should be aiming to create as much volume as possible! If your lengths are on the thin side, add a few extensions to thicken your locks or use a sock-bun insert to create the illusion of more hair. After backcombing, twist your lengths into your desired chignon shape and secure with hair pins. Finish with an even layer of hairspray for a long-lasting finish.
