The bob: things to think about before taking the plunge

The bob is a timeless cut that is always hugely successful. Whether it’s graduated, short or mid-length, the bob is suitable for all hair types. To make sure you choose the right shape, here are some things about before you take the plunge.

Before you head to the salon, ask yourself a few questions. “First of all: do I want to have to style my hair every day or not? If the answer is no, steer clear of full-bodied styles. A bob requires a lot of day-to-day upkeep if you don’t have straight, flexible hair. People with curly hair could end up with what feels like a thick mound of hair around the head, which is not what they intended.”

If you have straight, supple hair, then by all means go for it. “Women with this hair type have the advantage in that they can style their hair however they like. They can mix and match their hairstyles from day to day and switch from a natural bob to a well-styled ‘do.

Some women like to be able to tie up the hair even with a bob. “To be able to do this, avoid going any shorter than the chin. Any shorter and you won’t be able to tie it up. If you need to tie it up every day, avoid going for anything too short.”

Our tip: Speak to your hairdresser, he or she will be able to advise on which bob to go for. If you start off with a good cut, your bob will require no more upkeep than long hair.
