Braid

Try out the unicorn braid!

You no longer need to have multi-coloured hair to get the unicorn look, as proven by our step-by-step tutorial on how to successfully create the Unicorn Braid!

What is the unicorn braid?

This plait does not use any revolutionary techniques, it simply features an African braid (cornrow) which has been given this name due to its positioning. It is situated at the top of the head, where you would usually put your middle parting. Furthermore, it is not braided down to the tips, making it look a little like a unicorn’s horn. It first made an appearance under the hashtag #UnicornBraid coined by actress Nina Dobrev and her hairstylist Riawna Capri. Since then, this on-trend hairstyle has been inspiring braid fans all over Instagram. Perfect for mid-length to long hair, it can be worn in several different ways. Half-up half-down with loose locks or a wavy look, for example. Alternatively, it can be coupled with a ponytail or a chignon, worn up high or low at the nape of the neck to create a whole array of different looks.

How do you create this style?

Start by selecting a large section of hair where your middle parting lies. Backcomb it to keep the volume at the roots. Then, start braiding following the inverted three-strand braiding technique. You simply need to bring the middle section underneath the other two sections instead of over the top to create this more voluminous style of plait. Then work your way down, adding smaller sections of hair from either side to each strand of the plait as you go, to create an African braid. Once you have reached half-way down your head, secure the braid with a hairband to form the unicorn’s horn.
