The pros discuss the uber-short bowl cut
The bowl cut for guys is perfect for creating a tough, masculine look. However, you may find that looking after your new style isn’t as easy as expected. The pros reveal all.
The bowl cut ultimately limits the amount of styles you can create. ‘Once you have shaven away the undersides, it’s extremely difficult to do anything else with your hair other than wear it in the bowl shape. There is one alternative, however; slick your lengths backwards using a small amount of gel’.
The bowl cut is extremely distinctive and well recognised. ‘This style is highly structured, and there’s no room for mistakes. There are two zones which should be clear from a distance. It’s this variation in length and texture that creates such a well-polished finish’.
If you have straight hair, a bowl cut is an obvious hairstyle choice. ‘Curly or frizzy hair types can give this look a go too, however you may end up with a ‘mushroom’ effect, whereby the upper section is full of volume, rather than looking neat and groomed’.
To create this look in salons, you’ll need to commit to shaving your under sections. ‘A stylist will tie up your upper section and start shaving around the area where you want the bowl to end. Ideally, ask for a faded effect around the sides, for a more gradual shift between textures. This hairstyle isn’t particularly difficult to create, but requires the hand of an expert for a super-neat finish’.
Our advice: At your salon appointment, ask your stylist for a gradual fade. This will give your style more movement and a more natural finish. If not, your bowl may end up looking stiff and very unflattering.
