70s hairstyles
The 70s marked a turning point in people’s attitudes. A wind of change blew across all areas of life, including fashion. And today, one of the first things that spring to mind when we think of the beauty trends of the 70s is the “Charlie’s Angels” hairstyle. But this was not the only hairstyle to come out of the 70s! Let’s take a look at some of the most iconic styles of this unforgettable decade.
The Farrah Fawcett “Charlie’s Angels” hairstyle. This big style, featuring flicked-out ends, speaks for itself. Long layers give hair the volume it needs to pull off this look. A round brush is used to flick out the lengths and the fringe and add texture.
Curly and wavy hair. Mid-length or long, 70s hair was all about curls and waves. Wispy styles with a huge potential for glam, as seen on Brigitte Bardot and Lynda Carter (Wonder Woman).
Long and straight. The Paris protests of May 1968 saw huge transformations in hairstyles, which gained inches in length and were worn super straight. The hippie trend was then born, with Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin leading the way. Accessories were spotted on heads here, there and everywhere and came in the form of head scarves with graphic prints or simple headbands placed across the forehead.
Platinum blonde. In the 70s, hair colouring became more accessible, with simpler techniques and more affordable prices. Women who had always dreamed of being blonde could now make it happen. In the 70s, platinum blonde was the colour of choice for feminine and sensual styles, just like the shade seen on Sylvie Vartan and Brigitte Bardot.
XXL volume. Diana Ross and Donna Summer are to thank for the success of the afro cut. The idea? Curly hair with maximum volume for a get-lifted style. If you don’t have frizzy hair, you’ll find it difficult to get this style, but you could always try a wig for your night out for a very “Jackson Five” look!
