The comeback of the perm

Forget the cascading curls of Olivia Newton-John’s perm in Grease. A much more understated version of this legendary hairstyle is making a comeback on the Spring-Summer 2017 catwalks. We take a closer look.

Each to their own when it comes to curls

Scrunched waves on the DNKY catwalk, floaty frizz in the Vanessa Seward fashion show and 80s curls at Topshop Unique: this season, curls are a must! Say goodbye to hair blunders – the perm suits all hair types no matter what the length. Ideal for giving volume to flat hair, there are endless possibilities when it comes to curls. Tight or loose, curls are more on-trend than ever!

Method

By definition, the perm is a permanent curling method which requires touch-ups on regrowth every 3 months. Your hairdresser will work with the very structure of your hair by winding your locks around rollers and applying an ammonia-based product which penetrates the hair fibre to hold curls in place long term. The look of your curls will vary depending on the size of the curlers used. Smaller rollers will give you tight curls whereas large ones will give a loose curl effect.

Adopt the 2017 version of the perm

Having fallen out of favour and been accused of burning the hair fibre as it was sometimes carried out on damaged hair, the perm has practically disappeared from salons. Even so, wavy curls are the 2017 trend and hairdressers are offering temporary methods which weaken the hair less. At Jean Louis David, ask for the S-Waves treatment to get beautiful just-back-from-the-beach locks whilst holding onto your hair’s vitality. This service gives you the chance to try out this on-trend look for 6 to 8 weeks.
