Let your hair down

What people think it means: letting your hair fall freely

What it really means: behaving in a free or uninhibited manner. The phrase was first used in the 1800s century for women who usually kept their hair pinned up, only letting it down in private, particularly before bathing or heading to bed – the times when they would be most relaxed.
