Most women all want big, voluminous hair…within reason. Yet, volume was taken to extravagant new heights on the Jean-Paul Gaultier runway, to the point of looking almost impossible to re-create at home. Here’s our how-to tutorial.
 
The XXL cone, as seen on the catwalk. Jean-Paul Gaultier’s shows are more often than not the epitome of eccentricity and originality. His inspiration, ever inventive, is reflected in the pieces he creates but also in the hairstyles that accompany them. From top-knots in the style of spinning tops, to animal prints and XXL cone-shaped creations, this is a designer who doesn’t hold back his creativity. His catwalk is one of the most talked about this year.
 
How to wear this style day-to-day. The cone shaped form of the bun can easily be transferred to a daytime style. However, leave the height of this style to the pros, unless you are prepared to manoeuvre your way around metro, bus and train doors every morning on your way to work. If you’re not going to keep the height of the style, tie your knot into a triangular shape which is a lot more original than a traditional ballerina top-knot or a messy bun.
 
How to create the look. Make sure your knot is tied on the top of your head, as seen on the Jean-Paul Gaultier catwalk, whilst reducing the size. To emphasise the original shape of the style and make it the focus of attention, try using a hair-cuff so that your knot keeps its cone-shape. To do this, gather your hair to make a high ponytail on the top of the head. Then, tie the hair-cuff to secure it and wrap the ends of your hair around. Tame flyaways with some bobby-pins. To finish, spray your whole style with hairspray to keep it in place.
