The '90s: when Jean Louis David created the rock chick look
Influenced by pop-rock singers and TV celebrities, in the ’90s women became more daring with their hairstyles. To appeal to their adventurous sides, Jean Louis David created hairstyles with more of a rock chick vibe than ever before!
In this photo gallery we take a look at the beginnings of a style that has since become timeless.
Jean Louis David haircuts got a wild new look…
In the nineties, sensible well-structured haircuts were a thing of the past and women were in search of fun new looks! They could count on their hairstylist and their collections, which were at the cutting edge of modernity, to assert, strand by strand, that they were more liberated and rebellious than ever. As short cuts had become more popular than ever, Jean Louis David created many different versions of this style. He reinvented the flagship bowl cut of the ’80s and gave it an incredibly rock’n’roll edge. He was inspired by the eccentric hairstyles of pop-rock groups, such as the crew cut worn by Annie Lennox, the singer of the band Eurythmics whose songs became the soundtrack of a rather rebellious decade. Jean Louis David also considered those who wanted to go for a less radical yet daring look, with a short haircut that was more feminine. This meant that glamour fans could play the femme fatale, like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. Not wanting to leave long hair out, Jean Louis David sensed the potential success of layered cuts, voted the “best hairstyle of 1995”, thanks to the Rachel cut, worn by one of main characters in the series Friends. Longer styles were layered and thinned out to inject movement and were full of perky volume!
… and hairstyles got rebellious
In the ’90s, nonchalant hairstyles reigned supreme. Flagship rock groups of the era even began to influence hairstyles. It marked the peak of a new trend spilling over into hairstyles: grunge. Nirvana-style locks fully embraced a deliberately wild, scruffy look. This meant that de-styled rock chick looks soon knocked flawlessly blow-dried hair, which had prevailed up until that point, off the top spot. Thanks to Jean Louis David’s haircuts, women could opt for easy to-live-with hairstyles with their hair worn down, or go in for tousled curls for a glam rock look often favoured by the top models of the decade.
