Hairstyle head-to-head: curtain fringe VS short fringe

Autumn-winter 2013-2014 looks set to be the season of the fringe! Wispy fringe, side fringe, long fringe, short fringe... whatever floats your boat! Which fringe should you choose for day-to-day wear and why? We take the curtain fringe and the short fringe head to head!

The curtain fringe. Ideal for long hair, the curtain fringe is long with depth and structure. The curtain is perfect for people with thick, flexible hair and adds depth and style to the season's hairstyles. It should be worn straight and bold, so it's worth taking a second or two to think about it before taking the plunge! The curtain fringe is far from subtle and it's not easy to get rid of. It needs to be cut as accurately as possible, so requires regular upkeep. This fringe is perfect for spicing up simple, strict cuts for a touch of originality and glam'rock.

The short fringe. A huge hit in the noughties, the short fringe is making a bold comeback this autumn/winter. Subtle, original and stylish, this fringe is just a few centimetres long. This wispy, short fringe is worn roughed-up or neatly styled, depending on the effect you're after. Whether you have long, short or mid-length hair, this soft and wispy fringe can be adapted to any style.

Our verdict. More modern, the curtain fringe is the go-to version for trendy hair. It can be worn day-to-day with loose hair or a sleek ponytail. The short fringe is a lot more difficult to manage, especially when thin. It's hard to pull off a fringe that looks like someone's gone all scissor-happy on your locks!
