Your ideal hair accessory: the beret

The recent Ralph Lauren runway just goes to show that it’s not only the French who love their berets. American women are equally as partial to wearing this chic accessory as their overseas friends. For winter 2015, the beret is set to be one of the most-wanted accessories, ahead of the ever-popular beanie hat.

Although this headgear was once considered to be an accessory reserved for men, the beret has proven time and time again in more recent years that it looks great on women too. Several designers have sent berets down the runway, whilst Hollywood stars such as Greta Garbo are also avid fans. Brigitte Bardot was famously spotted wearing hers during the filming of Bonnie & Clyde with Serge Gainsbourg. A beret instantly adds an air of sophistication to any hairstyle, whatever your hair type or length.

Want a more modern take on this classic? Take a look at Karlie Kloss’ all-white Ralph Lauren runway look for inspiration. For a unique take on the look, opt for a beret in a vibrant shade. If you prefer a more subtle effect, try out a monochrome outfit, similar to the catwalks. Regardless of which color you decide on, there’s only one hairstyle that you should be aiming to create. Long, loose lengths are ideal for the beret. Wear yours to the side or at a slant for and edgier feel. Don’t pull your beret down too tightly onto your style, as your hair needs room to breathe. If your locks tend to become greasy easily, make sure you carry a mini dry shampoo with you at all times for touch-ups during the day.
