The bouffant chignon is no longer reserved only for blushing brides. After a few setbacks, rock and retro styles are back in vogue, reinvented as chic and stylish. And contrary to popular belief, this type of style isn’t impossible to achieve at home. Here’s how…


Who can wear this style? Creating a good chignon obviously requires a minimum length. The bouffant chignon is therefore suitable for mid-length and long hair. People really relish the classic and dressed-up quality of this style. Plus, it is easily accessorized depending on your taste – a head scarf knotted on top of your head or a retro hair comb could really set your chignon apart from other styles.


Retro chic version. Back-comb the hair at the top of your head to give it some structure. Gather all your hair at the back of your head, brushing it gently. Twist the hair from this point, pulling it towards the top of your head and making sure to keep it neatly rolled. Fix in place with hair pins along the length of the chignon. Neaten up the chignon by pinning in any loose strands, taking care to keep the pins hidden in the mass of hair. Apply hairspray to keep the hair in place for the rest of the day!


Rock version. To give your bouffant chignon a rock dimension, all that’s needed is to liven it up with a hint of a quiff. Separate a section of hair at the front of the head at then create your bouffant chignon as above, using the rest of your hair. Then you can back-comb the section at the front of the head using a comb. Avoid working on your hair when it’s too clean as it won’t hold its shape so well. Once the hair has been back-combed, gently brush it back and fix it neatly into your bouffant chignon.
