Is hair layering a good idea?
Hair layering is a treatment routine that involves using a number of hair products. The aim? Leave hair looking healthier and more manageable.
Hair layering basically involves applying three treatments in succession. “Start by applying oil to nourish your hair. Next, wash with a shampoo. Finish by applying a conditioner to untangle your mid-lengths and ends.”
Rather than following the routine word for word, why not customise! “Instead of applying oil, you could finish with a mask after your conditioner. While the conditioner simply helps to untangle, the mask treats your hair deeply.”
The benefits of such routines, however, have not yet been proven. “There are products designed precisely for each hair type. Whether you have fine, dry, natural or coloured hair, there is something for everyone. Why apply treatments one after the other? The concept is less than convincing.”
Our tip: alternate between treatments! “When you decide to wash your hair, alternate between products designed for your hair type and those that add shine to your colour. Alternating between treatments stops your hair from getting used to just one type of hair product. Hair responds better to treatments when you’re not constantly applying the same ones.”
