How to use styling wax
When it comes to creating your favourite hair styles, styling products are great for boosting effectiveness and creativity. One particular product, styling wax, is essential for getting the movement you want in your hair. You just need to know how to use it…
Styling wax is great for adding texture, shine and movement to any hair. However, you must not rely on it to hold your hair in place. “Styling wax is used to discipline your hair and create your favourite styles whilst adding extra shine.” Styling wax comes in the form of a paste. “Styling wax used to be hard and therefore very difficult to work with. Today it is softer, but still wax! To make it easier to use, rub the paste between your hands to warm it up.” Apply to dry rather than wet hair.
With styling wax there’s no need to worry about leaving your hair looking stiff and unnatural. However, too much of the product in one place can leave your hair looking greasy; and you will have to wash it. “Start by placing a small amount in your hands. Warm it up in your palms, then apply evenly throughout your hair, without focusing on one area in particular. Then gently work the wax through your hair to adjust the amount of wax you need. This will help you avoid any nasty surprises. Always remember that fine hair will require less wax than thicker hair. The thinner your hair, the less product you will need.
How often you should use styling wax depends on the length of your hair. Long hair? Use this product as much as you like, every day if you want, especially if you’re using it on the ends or to tame fly-away hairs. “If you have short hair, however, avoid using it every day. It is not as straightforward as using it on long hair. Your scalp can sometimes end up absorbing the wax, which can have a suffocating effect. So avoid using too much of it.”
Our tip: Wax does not have a fixing effect. If you want the movement you’ve created with the wax to last, mix a little gel with it before applying. The movement will then keep its shape for a lot longer!
