Does drinking water give you beautiful locks?
Your mother, grandmother or one of your friends has no doubt pointed out to you that you should drink more water to get beautiful-looking locks. Is this just a preconceived idea or does it really have benefits? Jean Louis David shines some light on this.
It is no secret that water makes up around 60% of the human body and is present in the blood, lungs and brain. It is fundamental for the functioning of the human body. But what about our hair’s condition?
Water: essential to the scalp
Having hair in tip-top condition starts with a healthy scalp. In fact, the scalp’s vascular tissue is a real nourishing base and where the hair draws its nutrients from. Those nutrients are required for hair growth and vitality and thanks to water, these nutrients can be transported to the heart of the blood vessels. This means that the less water you drink, the more the blood flow reaching your roots will be reduced. The result: the hair is weakened and can even fall out. This phenomenon is more prevalent for some people during the changing of the seasons, also known as seasonal hair loss. A small piece of advice: to promote blood circulation at the roots, combine drinking sufficient amounts of liquids with regular scalp massages.
It’s not at all like the skin, as the scalp is made up of different layers of cells: the dermis, epidermis and hypodermis. A lack of water can lead to these layers becoming dehydrated, this manifests as an itchy and irritated scalp. These inconveniences can have repercussions on the condition of your hair, as its base is no longer healthy.
Before you rush to grab your bottle of water, don’t forget that drinking enough water does not mean that you should forego pampering treatments suited to your hair type.
