Choosing the right fixing styling product
Choosing the right fixing styling product

Choosing the right fixing styling product

Several products can be used to create and hold a style, or even a simple movement. For best results, you need to know which ones to go for and how to use them to create styles that last!

Fixing styling products are essential if you’ve put a lot of time and effort into a style and you want it to stay in place all day or night. But it can be easy to get lost amongst the array of styling products available. ‘Three types of products can be used to fix your style in place: gel, hairspray and mousse. Each of these products has fixing power, but they are not all used in the same way. This means that some of them can be used together’.

First of all, styling mousses. Originally, styling mousse was used for creating styles. ‘Now though, there are mousses that set and hold the hair. These are particularly suitable for fine hair, for adding body and hold’. Mousse is applied to wet hair using the fingers. It is important not to use too much or apply too much in one place. Otherwise you’ll end up with some sections of your hair set and others not!

Gels and hairsprays are used for finishing a style, but they can also be applied as you create your hairstyle, in order to add shape. Gel should be applied using the fingers. ‘Place a small amount in your hands, warm it up and then mould your hair, distributing the product carefully. This will create your style and fix it in place at the same time’!

Hairspray is generally used to fix a style once in place, but it can also be used during styling to set each stage. ‘If you want to use hairspray when creating your style, choose a medium-hold version. But if you’re simply using it to keep a finished style in place, choose a strong-hold version’. Keep a mini hairspray with you in your handbag in case you need any touch-ups during the day or night!

Our tip: Careful not to use too much of these products every day. A layer of hairspray every morning is fine, but using the whole can is a definite no-no! Over time and in strong doses, these products can weaken the hair.  So spray sparingly!
