3 ways to pull off a headscarf for a retro look
A scarf is not only great for wearing around your neck, it can also be used as a hair accessory, to tie up your hair or simply to funk up any style. Check out these three ways of wearing it for a resolutely retro look.
The quiff. Take a large section of hair from the front of your head. Tie up the rest of your hair while you create your quiff. Hold this section of hair in the air and use a wide-toothed comb to backcomb it: this will add volume and hold your quiff in place. Start at the mid-lengths and comb your hair back to the roots. Do this on the underneath side of your hair so that it can’t be seen. Then pull this piece of hair back and secure with hair grips. Next, take your scarf and roll it up into the shape of a band, placing it around your neck. Bring it up to the top of your head and tie into a simple bow.
The bun. Unlike the quiff, the bun is perfect for adding volume to the back of your hair, rather than the front. This is a sixties trend that will only work on long hair. Gather your hair into a messy high chignon. To do this, tie your hair up into a high ponytail and roll the hair around the hairband. Fold your scarf into the shape of a large band and wrap it around your head, knotting it at the back just below your bun.
The headband. For a simple, retro look, straighten or blow-dry your hair. Fold your scarf into a wide headband and place it as far to the front of your head as possible. Keep it long so that you can knot it at the nape of your neck and let the remaining length sit nonchalantly on one of your shoulders. A simple and chic style!
