How to wear the boater hat?
Though the boater hat has not necessarily been one of this summer’s key accessories, it has lived on through the ages with elegance, fascinating all with its authentic, country edge.
The history of the boater hat. This flat top, flat-rimmed hat, usually accessorised with a ribbon, is your go-to hat for the summer. The boater hat emerged as a sportswear trend at the beginning of the 30s. Cycling, horse-riding, hunting… the boater hat was the hat to be seen in. It then became associated with open-air cafés and country outings, especially after Renoir’s painting “Le déjeuner des canotiers” (Luncheon of the Boating Party). It became a hit fashion accessory when Coco Chanel brought out her own version, making a mockery of the bigger, fancier hats of the time.
Materials and styles. The boater hat was originally made entirely from woven straw. But it can also be made from other, more chic materials such as lace (as seen at Erdem), raffia or even canvas. For a laid-back or romantic look, opt for this classic straw version. Team it with short dresses, floral prints and flat sandals. For a more preppy look, go for a delicate lace version. You could even try coloured raffia. With these styles, choose high heels, leather and clean cut pieces.
How to wear it? The boater hat is best saved for sunny days. Wear it slightly tilted, either to the front or to the side. This gives it a more modern edge. As for your hair, the boater hat sits nicely on short hair or an up-do. Think low, ballerina bun for a strict-chic look, or slightly dishevelled for a more casual style. The boater hat also goes perfectly with a cute braid pulled over one shoulder (if your hair is long enough).
