Hair extensions: common misconceptions

There are a number of common misconceptions surrounding hair extensions. To make sure you’re getting the right information, here are some answers to your most frequently asked questions.

Hair extensions damage your hair. Wearing hair extensions permanently will weaken your hair. But if you do things right and only have extensions twice a year, no problem! “Ideally you should leave them in for around three months and wait a month before getting new ones put in.”

My hair won’t grow if I wear extensions. Extensions don’t stop hair growing in any way. “Sometimes we even recommend them to customers who want long hair but don’t have the patience to wait for theirs to grow. Extensions are a temporary solution while hair is growing!”

You can see the extensions. If your hair extensions have been applied correctly, they are impossible to spot. They should blend in perfectly with your natural hair for a perfect result. “Hair used for extensions is natural and therefore the same colour as your hair. So, unless people touch them and feel the different texture, no one will ever know!”

I can’t go swimming with extensions in. “This is obviously not true! There are just a few things you have to be remember. Such as tying it up before going for a swim.” But otherwise, the colour or texture of your extensions will not change. Take care of your extensions by washing them regularly and you’ll have no problems!

Hair extensions eventually get uncomfortable. “I find the opposite! They’re uncomfortable at first as you’re not used to wearing them. But after a few hours you’ll forget they’re there.” And that’s coming from an expert!

I can’t use curling tongs or straighteners on my extensions. Quite the opposite. It is better to use straighteners to get super sleek straight hair or curling tongs to create waves rather than use a hair dryer to give yourself a blow-dry. “Avoid pulling on your extensions; put away your round brush and hair dryer if you’ve got extensions in!”
