Clippers, a Jean Louis David styling tool

Most people seem to think that clippers are for trimming men’s hair or for shaving. At Jean Louis David, they are also used to cut women’s hair. Here’s a bit about this styling tool.

Clippers have been used to cut hair at Jean Louis David since the beginning of the 90s. Until then, scissors were the only tool used to create stylish haircuts. “But around this time, more women started working and had less time to go to the salon. So to speed things up, Jean Louis David turned to clippers, which work a lot faster. They were an instant success!” This simple technique was then taught to all Jean Louis David stylists with just one guideline: create cuts that are easy to maintain and style at home.

But speed is not clippers’ only winning feature. They can also be used to create blunt, perfectly neat cuts. “Use clippers with a comb. Slide the comb into the hair to the length you’re after then use the clippers to cut off the hair below the comb. This makes for ultra-geometric cuts but doesn’t stop the stylist from getting creative.

Not everyone is a fan of clippers though… clients more specifically! “Many clients don’t trust clippers. We try to reassure them about this tool, but if they really don’t feel comfortable we use scissors instead.” The result isn’t that much different!

Our tip: At Jean Louis David there isn’t just one perfect tool. Like scissors, clippers are used for perfectly neat cuts. But the razor is to be avoided. “Personally, I think the razor is outdated and that hair doesn’t look great afterwards. But it’s a matter of opinion.”
