Mahogany hair: opt for a colour full of character

Timeless and daring, mahogany warms up and illuminates locks with its reddish-brown pigments. Conditions for trying out this colour, techniques, the results...our styling expert, Aurea Sanchez-Coletto, takes a closer look.

Mahogany is one of the darkest shades of red. This nuanced colour is packed full of brown, auburn and red pigments. Once applied, it embellishes your hair with intense warm highlights. It is also available in several shades (red, dark, copper or iridescent...) for a subtle and personalised result.

For which colour hair?

It is recommended for dark chestnut to brown bases. If you are blonde, opt for copper red for a more natural result. However, mahogany suits all complexions, from the palest to the darkest of skin tones. It also suits all kinds of hair, whether it be straight or curly.

How to opt for this colour?

In our salons, you can benefit from a hair assessment and a personalised application. If your hair is brown, a colouring technique isn't necessary. Lightening your hair by three to four tones is enough. When you lighten your hair, the red pigments will naturally appear. If you have light brown hair, we use the same technique, by reducing the intensity of the lightening product. To make upkeep easier and to obtain a more natural result, we focus on strands. With the Sunlight treatment (our highlighting technique specifically for dark bases), your hair will be lightened by giving it an immediate sun-kissed effect. On the other hand, if you are blonde, we use a mahogany colouring technique to add darker pigments.

"If your hair is brown, a colouring technique isn't necessary. Lightening your hair by three to four tones is enough."

How can you maintain your hair colouring?

At home, opt for products specifically formulated for coloured hair. In particular the Jean Louis David colour enhancers from the Color Therapy range. Due to their formula rich in nutritive pigments, your hair will be revived. For mahogany hair, use the copper treatment once a week, as a complement to your shampoo and other hair products. Apply it to clean, damp, wrung out hair. Let it sink in for 5 minutes and rinse it off in clean water. Our tip for an even application? Use a comb.
