How do you choose a shade of red to suit your base colour?

That’s right – despite preconceived ideas to the contrary, red hair suits everyone. From strawberry blonde to auburn, its thousand and one shades mean that it can enhance all hair colours. Read on to find out which one will suit you perfectly!

A subdued or vibrant shade of red to enhance a blonde base

Fortunately for you, your fair hair colour is the ideal base for a pretty red hair colouring! Although technically you can go for all shades of red, opting for strawberry blonde, the lightest shade of red is a great option as its golden and copper highlights give your hair a subtle colour. You could also go for the vibrant orange shades of flaming red to make more of a statement. Both will enhance your porcelain complexion and your green or blue eyes for a very natural result.

A medium shade of red to transform a chestnut brown base

You must opt for a stronger shade which is closer to your original colour. If you have light chestnut brown hair, opt for a copper red whose intense orange brown highlights will put a twist on your locks, in harmony with your golden skin tone. If your hair is darker, go for a nice mahogany or a flaming red shade which will reveal the red pigments naturally present in your light brown hair.

A deep or dark red to add character to a brunette base

Whatever you do, don’t ruin your chocolate to ebony coloured hair with a red tone that is too far removed from your base colour. Instead opt for hybrid reds such as a red-brown (a subtle mix of copper and red highlights) or auburn which mixes purple tones in with your dark brown locks to add contrast and depth to your hair. These dark yet light-catching, intense reds will perfectly enhance your dark skin tone and give you a radiant glow.
