Hairspray: true and false

You love hairspray’s fixing effect but you’re afraid that it might damage your hair. But as long as it is used in the right way, hairspray won’t damage your hair at all. We clear up some of the misgivings you may have about hairspray.

Hairspray damages hair: False
Unless you empty half a bottle of the stuff onto your hair each day, hairspray will not damage your hair. “As long as you use it in moderation, there is no risk of it damaging your hair. If you love using hairspray, make sure you wash your hair regularly.”

Hairspray can be brushed out: True
You don’t have to wash your hair to rid your hair of hairspray. “A good hairspray will not leave any residue on your hair or leave it looking greasy. Your hair should also fall back into its natural position after you’ve brushed it. If it doesn’t, change your hairspray!

Hairspray tends to leave hair feeling stiff: False
No, a good hairspray doesn’t necessarily leave your hair feeling stiff. “If the hairspray is applied evenly and the right distance from your hair (around 30cm), people won’t even be able to tell you’re wearing it. When applying, careful not to focus too much on a specific area of your hair. This is bad for your hair and is very noticeable!

Hairspray and fixing spray are the same thing: False
Don’t get mixed up between hairspray and fixing spray, they’re both very different! “Yes, they’re both fixing products, but they are used for different things. Hairspray is a very fine spray, almost like a mist. Fixing spray comes out in little drops for a stronger effect. It is often used to set movement, while hairspray is used at the last minute. With hairspray it’s a lot easier to direct it to where you want to apply it.”

For a long-lasting hold you need a hairspray with a strong hold factor: True
Every hairspray is different. Choose one that offers the hold you’re after. “A rigid hairstyle will require a strong-hold hairspray. To simply emphasise your hair’s movement, choose something a lot weaker.
