Émilie Hebert's thoughts on rice protein

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself?

Émilie Hébert: I'm a beauty consultant, a freelance formulation developer, the founder of Make it beauty (an ethical and organic concept store) and also the author of several books on "green" cosmetics.

2. What are the properties of rice protein?

É.H: In three words: rice protein is hydrating, softening and fortifying. Rice protein is equally good for the skin and hair. It is also renowned for adding volume to flat locks and restoring lacklustre hair's shine. It is a very gentle active ingredient. This makes it perfect for people who have a sensitive scalp or who are have allergies, especially gluten allergy.

3. What are the benefits of rice protein for your hair?

É.H: It is a hydrolyzed plant protein. That means that its molecules have been reduced in such a way that they penetrate the skin or hair more effectively. Rice protein also improves the hair's ability to retain water, hence why it is considered hydrating. Packed full of water, the hair shaft looks inflated which explains rice protein's volumizing effect, but not only that... The explanation is also in its electrostatic charge. It is a bit like two magnets repelling each other, the link between positively charged rice proteins and negatively charged hair creates a volumizing effect. Finally, rice protein leaves a film on the hair's cuticles which makes it shiny. As a bonus, it makes detangling and styling easier!

4. For which hair types is rice protein recommended?

É.H: Dry, thin, limp hair lacking in volume will particularly benefit from its many beneficial properties.

5. How should rice protein be used on the hair?

É.H: This cosmetic active ingredient can be used in shampoos, conditioners and hair masks. A few drops added to the products you use as part of your hair regime is enough. However, rice protein is soluble in water but not in oil. You should take that into account when concocting your formulations.
