Choosing the right hair straighteners
Hair straighteners are the essential tool for anyone who loves straight hair. With a good pair of straighteners, you’ll find it so easy to create all of your favourite straight styles. But before you do this, you need to make sure you choose the right ones. Read our advice before dashing out to the shops!
The most important thing is to choose hair straighteners with a heat regulator. “Just because a pair of straighteners heats up to 200°C doesn’t mean they are more effective or work faster than any other pair. The heat regulator allows you to adjust the temperature to suit your hair type. Fine or fragile hair, for example, cannot tolerate too high temperatures. Frizzy hair, on the other hand, can deal with heat better.” So go for straighteners which are fitted with a regulator and can reach a maximum of 190-200°C.
In terms of plates, go for ceramic. This is less harmful for your hair. “You should still, however, apply a heat-protector product to protect your hair from the heat of the plates.”
We strongly suggest you buy professional hair straighteners. That way you can be sure that they are effective and less harmful to your hair. “An average quality pair of straighteners will generally not heat up as well, meaning that you have to straighten the same section of hair over and over again. This is not good for your hair.” Remember one thing: never hold the straighteners still on your hair.
To ensure your straighteners are as effective as possible and to maximise their life span, there are a few things you should bear in mind. First of all, avoid pulling on the wire and do not store them in damp places. This is common sense for any electrical appliance! You should also clean the plates after use. “Wait for them to cool down and use a dry or slightly damp cloth to wipe them down. This will get rid of any remaining styling product. Don’t worry, this will not damage your straighteners.”
Our tip: You can also use your straighteners as curling tongs if you know what you’re doing! To do so, twist sections of hair with the straighteners, being careful not to snap your hair or leave it looking too over the top… But, to add a few nice waves to your hair for a night out, all it takes is a little know-how and your straighteners will do just the trick!
