What make-up to wear with brown hair

Brunettes can really let themselves go when it comes to make-up! But this doesn’t mean they can just do anything... Here are a few basic rules to follow for fabulous make-up and a flawless complexion.

Complexion. It’s important to cover any flaws without suffocating your skin. “You can opt for a foundation, as long as the result is natural. To do this, choose a colour that matches your natural skin tone as closely as possible, so either a neutral, pink, gold or light beige.” Apply it evenly across the face and neck. Hide any dark circles under your eyes using a concealer. Choose one that’s slightly lighter than your natural skin tone and apply it starting at the inner corner of the eye and dabbing the product on using your fingertips. Finally, to brighten up your complexion, don’t forget blusher. Choose a rose, peach or apricot shade for a fresh complexion or a bronzing powder for a nice healthy glow.

Eyes. The eyeshadow you go for depends on the colour of your eyes. “If you have brown hair and brown eyes, go for khaki, dusty pink, gold, chocolate or purple. Green eyes will look best complemented with beige, sand or even mauve. Finally, people with blue eyes should avoid blues at all cost and instead go for orange or apricot shades.” For evening make-up, metallic and shimmer are fantastic for creating smouldering smoky eyes. Don’t forget a coat of mascara, preferably black, to intensify the look. Finally, a line of kohl or liquid eyeliner and you’re good to go!

Lips. Brunettes are spoilt for choice when it comes to lip colours, but you should avoid pinks -- these can leave you looking a bit too “girly girl”! To pull off the femme fatale look, be daring with a bright red or crimson for ultra-passionate lips. “Day-to-day, nude is always a good option. But this doesn’t mean you can’t also enjoy wearing deep red, purple or even fuchsia.”

Our tip: Brunettes can be daring, but careful not to go OTT. If you decide to emphasise your eyes, tone down your lips, and vice versa.
