What are the risks behind hair extensions?

The risks surrounding hair extensions have been circling for years. But, are these risks really true? Are hair extensions really bad for our hair and can they really cause balding? We take a closer look.

No, extensions do not make our hair fall out! ‘Nobody has ever complained about their hair falling out after using extensions. The only risk is that your hair can thin slightly. But this won’t be visible to the naked eye and has no real impact on your hair.’

There are different ways to attach extensions to your natural hair. ‘Using ultrasound, bonding and cold application methods. Jean Louis David salons use the cold application method. This doesn’t require any extra material such as threads or bonding and are easy to remove. This technique does not damage the hair fibre in the slightest.’

At your salon appointment, your stylist should examine your natural hair to see how healthy it is and in what condition, before recommending extensions. ‘You should not use hair extensions on super fine hair. In fact, your hair needs to be a certain thickness so that the extensions will hold and have something to stick to.

All of our extensions are applied by stylists who will all use different methods. ‘Don’t question their technique, as each stylist’s way of applying the extension has been vetted and verified. Make sure that you go to a reputable salon too. Don’t take the risk of picking a salon you have never visited before, as the stylist may not be qualified and trained to use extensions.’

Our tip: There are two different types of hair extensions: natural and synthetic. It’s much harder to work with synthetic hair extensions as they are more delicate and fragile. Try to go for the natural option if you can, and look after them with the right products.
