The sailor’s knot, spotted on the Maison Martin Margiela runway

Finding it difficult to imagine how sailor’s knots could possibly make it onto the runway? Think again, as some tricky knots used by fishermen and seamen are now being used as inspiration for catwalk hairstyles. Need more proof? Just take a look at Maison Martin Margiela Autumn-Winter 2014-2015 runway.

You’ll need fairly long hair for this sailor-knot look. Although this hairstyle may look simple to create, you’ll need to practice a few times to perfect your technique. After a couple of attempts, you should have grasped the basic concept and will be able to style the sailor-knot with ease every day. This innovative idea is perfect for ensuring a sophisticated finish to your outfit.

Start by parting your hair to one side. Next, gather all of your locks at the base of your neck. Separate into two and cross the left half over the right section, then pass it back underneath. To replicate the runway look, tie your hair at the ends quickly using a fine hair tie. Don’t worry if a few strands fall loose, as this will enhance the ‘I woke up like this’ vibe. Finish with an even layer of hairspray to keep your style in place, from morning to night.
