Silicon, what does it do?
A lot of cosmetic products, especially hair products, are made from silicon. This chemical ingredient might not get everyone’s approval, but many people use it. So what does silicon do, what are its benefits, and who should use it? Our experts give us some answers.
Silicon first appeared in the 1970s and is still a key ingredient in hair products today. This ingredient has a number of benefits, as long as it is used in the right way, and on hair that really needs it. “Silicon covers your hair in a sort of invisible film. Silicon-based shampoos and hair masks essentially have two main effects. They smooth out the cuticles, untangling your hair, and leave it looking lovely and shiny.”
We recommend silicon for people with thick, dry hair or hair that is difficult to manage. Silicon is also great for split ends or hair that lacks shine. “Silicon is an absolute godsend for these hair types! It makes styling so much easier and leaves hair looking nice and glossy.”
To optimise silicon’s effects, bear in mind these recommendations. “Silicon will not harm your hair as long as you use it sparingly. A product containing too much silicon will weigh down your hair. So read the labels on your shampoos and hair products, and make sure it’s not at the top of the list of ingredients mentioned.” Another recommendation, don’t leave silicon-based conditioners and hair masks on for too long. Same thing goes: they will end up weighing down your hair at make it difficult to style.
Our tip: When using silicon-based cosmetics, rinse your hair thoroughly to make sure you wash out all of the product. Otherwise, over time, your hair will end up dull and lifeless. Not quite the effect you were going for!
