Helmet and hair: our advice
If you use a scooter or motorbike to get around every day, you can’t not wear a helmet. Though it might not look great and is hardly ideal when it comes to your hairstyle, not wearing one is not an option. Follow our advice on how to learn to live in harmony with your helmet.
Even if your helmet is ventilated, your hairstyle is still likely to feel the effects of wearing it. In a closed space, the scalp gives off more heat than usual, and perspiration is the culprit that will alter your hairstyle. ‘However, there’s no need to worry about the effect the helmet has on your hair itself. It will not cause damage nor affect the health of your hair’.
Frizzy hair, straight hair, fine hair… It doesn’t matter which hair type you have. When it comes to the helmet, it’s all the same! The helmet ‘squashes’ your style, producing a highly undesirable result. However, there are some cuts which will limit the effect your helmet has on your style. ‘Go for cuts that fall back into place easily, such as wispy, layered or even unstructured cuts. Short hair also limits the helmet’s effects, as does long hair when worn up’.
Another trick is to avoid applying styling products before slipping on your helmet. ‘Gel and mousse will moisten when your scalp perspires, ruining your hairstyle even more. And of course it’s not particularly hygienic… Styling products will leave the inside of your helmet dirty’. Carry a low fix hairspray or serum with you to put your hair back into place before you arrive at the office. But use sparingly to avoid staining your helmet with styling products!
Our tip: When possible choose helmets with a vent in order to stop your scalp from perspiring too much. If you find that your helmet is making your hair greasy, try using a dry shampoo every now and then. Apply this to the roots to reduce the greasy effect.
