Touching up highlights or colouring your hair when pregnant failed to win unanimous support amongst the experts: some found it had risks for the baby. Find out our comprehensive review of the issue so you can decide what to do.
It is difficult to evaluate the effects of colouring products during pregnancy. Some products state their ingredients are dangerous for the baby, but others state the chemical products used in them are too weak to have an impact on your child's health.
Another problem is added to this: how you react to the product. Even if you are used to colouring your hair, everything can change during pregnancy . You might become highly sensitive to the product, your scalp might become irritated or you may have an allergic reaction. Not forgetting your senses, which are more heightened during this period. Because of this, you may not be as tolerant to how certain products smell.
If you absolutely must touch up your roots, go for the safer option. Avoid classic colouring products, opt for those with ammonia-free formulae which are temporary or plant based (best for minimising the risks). The best thing to do? Go to the salon. The help of a professional will facilitate the application and will ensure you have the right amount of product for you (home colouring products can be too harsh during this period). However, no radical changes! Maintaining your hair's colour is one thing, going from brunette to ice blond is another. Always be wary of allergies.
When is the right time? Again, opinions are divided. Generally, it is recommended to refrain from colouring your hair during the first three months (that's when the foetus' organs are forming). At Jean Louis David, we will not colour your hair after 6 months of pregnancy either, due to the fumes which are likely to affect you and make you feel ill.
OK, it is highly inadvisable for you to colour your hair. However, pregnancy has many advantages for your hair , with some exceptions. Your hair will tend to be shinier, thicker, less greasy and the hair should grow more quickly at the roots. Make the most of it! This is the time to dare to try new hairstyles: sleek braids, floaty chignons, pretty curls... you have carte blanche in terms of styling. Our advice? Plan to get your hair trimmed before you give birth: a great way to take care of yourself before you're snowed under.
