How to wear the beret

Though recognised as a must-have head gear in the Basque country, the beret has long been judged as old-fashioned and outdated. But over the years, designers have turned it into a trend well-deserving of its place on the podiums and on the high street. Here’s how to pull it off.

For a preppy look. A look borrowed from the retro-inspired, well-dressed schoolgirls of the Upper East Side, brought back into fashion by the TV series “Gossip Girl”. A chic and sophisticated style which will give you that sweet and innocent air. The beret is the perfect accessory to recreate this style. Choose versions in soft shades, felts and knits. Wear it on loose hair, long or short, straight or curly. The beret should sit comfortably on the head keeping the hair in place. Wear it slightly to the side for a bit of variation.

For a casual look. More of a jeans/trainers kind of girl? You can still add a bit of style with a beret, without looking too sophisticated. Choose more original versions, versions in pastels or colour blocks or even versions with extra details such as diamantes or studs. Oversized berets are also great for showing off a more offbeat style. These can be worn on both short and long hair. But try wearing with your hair up for a more casual look. Low, messy chignons will work well. Place your beret on your head, slightly to the side, leaving a few pieces of hair out for a deliberately dishevelled effect. Another way of wearing the beret is to position it slightly further back. This is perfect for showing off your fringe, if you have one.
