Which highlights are right for my hair colour?

Getting highlights brings added shine and lightness to your natural hair colour, which tends to be lighter than your base colour. But, how do you know which shade of highlight is best for your hair and skin tone? The experts are here to help.

It’s essential to respect the natural colour of your hair, in order to pick the correct shade. ‘When you want to put highlights into your hair, you need to start the process slowly and gradually. Your stylist usually works with 10 different shades in mind, from black to white blonde. This will enable you to decide which shade is best for you. To get the most out of your highlights, always stick within 3-4 shades of your base colour, to keep your look natural’.

The colour of your highlights depends on your base colour, but it’s still important to listen to the advice given from your stylist. ‘If you have black hair, the lightest you can go would be a chestnut colour, but no lighter. A woman with chestnut hair as her base colour can go as light as having blonde highlights. The style of your highlights all depends on what effect you are trying to achieve…are you going for lighter hair, or added shine and vibrancy? To make your hair super shiny, opt for highlights that are one or two shades lighter than your natural hair colour. If you’re after lighter hair, then choose a shade that is 3-4 shades lighter than your natural hair colour.’

It’s not a good idea to opt for highlights that are darker than your base colour. ‘Rather than getting dark highlights dotted around the head, it’s better to dye larger sections a darker colour. Not only will these lowlights be more appealing to the eye, it will be much easier to take care for your hair than if you were to opt for individual dark highlights’.

Our tip: Make sure you talk to your stylist about the effect you’re after. It’s better to go for a natural look, so explain fully what you want your hair to look like so they have a good idea of what will suit you best.
