What are the risks behind hair extensions?

Extensions are great for making your hair appear much longer in no time at all. Tempted to try out longer locks but worried they might damage your natural hair? Make sure you know all the facts before taking the plunge. Our pros share their expert knowledge to help you make the right choice.

Extensions do not necessarily make hair fall out. ‘Firstly, there are two different types of extensions; hot and cold versions. Hot extensions use a technique which bonds the extension to the root of your existing hair. Using this type too frequently can actually cause hair to thin and loose density. On the other hand however, if they are well looked after they will not damage your hair. Cold extensions are much gentler and do not use heat, although they do require care and maintenance’.

Try and go for the most natural extensions available. ‘The quality of synthetic hair extensions has improved considerably over the years, but nothing beats natural hair. Many hair extensions use Indian, European or Asian hair for a completely natural looking finish. When you have your extensions removed, try to give your hair a couple of weeks ‘resting’ time to recover before your next appointment’.

Our advice: Extensions tend to last around 3 months. After then, they can begin to look damaged and the bond at the root is often more visible.
