Wearing headphones: what effects does it have on your hair?

Music lovers take note: your trusty music accessory is not without risks for your locks. What are the hair issues that you may encounter when you wear headphones, and what should you do to avoid these problems? We take a closer look.

Kinks & flat hair

Anyone who wears headphones will have observed that your travelling companion will leave its mark on your hair. The headband used to support the ear pads exerts a certain amount of continual pressure on your locks, flattening down their volume. As for padded headphones, they mess up your hairstyle (not always with the most attractive results), leaving kinks in your hair just behind your ears. Though worse things happen.

An increased risk of damage…

However, if you love swinging your hair to the beat of your favourite album, your headphones will not only ruin your hairstyle, but also your hair’s condition. If your hair is loose, it will repeatedly rub against your headphones with every step you take. The result: the hair fibre becomes weakened in that area and your locks become brittle.

What can I do to address the issue?

To enjoy your music in a carefree way, it’s preferable to put your hair up before pressing play! With a simple ponytail created in 3 minutes flat, you will stop your headphones from moving back and forth on your locks and thereby prevent unruly strands from popping up. If you sometimes skip the ponytail and leave your hair down, use repair masks regularly to counteract the damage. Lastly, if your locks are already very damaged, opt for in-ear headphones instead!
