Washing your hair every day: a good or bad idea?

Should you wash your hair every day to have dreamy locks? This question constantly sparks debate, even amongst the hairdressing elite. It’s high time any preconceived ideas were washed away so we can finally re-establish the truth.

When it comes to washing our hair, there are out-and-out fans of daily shampooing and those who think otherwise. But who is right and who is wrong? No one and everyone. It actually all depends on the nature of your hair and your lifestyle. Here’s why…

You have normal hair

In your case it is highly inadvisable to wash your hair daily and with good reason. Your sebaceous glands work extremely well and produce just the right amount of sebum to hydrate your hair. By washing your locks every day, you strip them of this natural and essential substance your body produces. The result is that your hair dries out. For you, two washes a week is enough. If you regularly exercise, you can of course wash your hair on a daily basis provided you use a mild frequent use shampoo.

You have dry hair

Your locks are painfully lacking in hydration. As you may have gathered, washing your hair daily is therefore not a good idea. Instead, shampoo just once or twice a week and make sure you use ultra-nourishing products to quench your hair fibre’s thirst. If you do sporting activities which makes you feel the need to wash your hair every day, alternate these rich treatments with mild products free from silicones and sulphates. To complement this, you could also try a sebum treatment, once or twice a week depending on your hair’s needs.

You have greasy hair

If your scalp is quick to become greasy, it is essential you wash your hair daily. Besides looking greasy and rather unsightly, excess sebum can cause itching and flaky dandruff. What’s the best thing you can do? Wash your hair daily using a product with astringent and purifying properties to regulate sebum secretion. Alternate this with a mild treatment to maintain your scalp’s balance.
